Artist Interview: Lucid Dementia
Tell us about yourself and your music
I’m a Clinical Research Analyst by day and a screaming white witch in a 22 year old industrial band at night. Or it’s “Industrial”, as that’s my main influence for the band, but I tend to not let labels dictate how I write music. We are mostly pop oriented industrial, with a tendency to look at the world through blood stained glasses. The band’s mascot “Luci”, a six foot tall alien creature puppet still partially performs with the band and mostly fronts all of the vocals.
Talk to us more about your latest release
“When The World Leaves You Behind” is a ghost themed fun album of industrial pop songs. No intentional politics (unlike our last album) and much more fun with the occult, with our usual fun sound of metal/industrial/pop and puppet vocals. It is the ear wormiest of our albums. Don’t listen if you don’t like having a song stuck in your head for the rest of the day, especially if you don’t want to be singing things like “It came from the dead…” in public.
What inspired you to write this release?
Because I am a slave to Luci. So this band won’t stop until she does. Our last album was much more political and heavy oriented. It was turning off some audience members, and I kind of wanted a break from being so heavy. So I decided to have fun with the occult and ghost stories. Every day is halloween isn’t it?
Any plans to release a video?
We already released our first professionally produced video (featuring grown up child star Micheal Baldwin from the movie Phantasm) for one of the songs: “It Came From The Dead”:
A second video is in production for the song “Close Your Eyes”.
Any plans to hit the road?
Not really. We would like to, but only if it became fiscally reasonable. We’ve been around for 22 years. There are kids, mortgages, and day jobs involved now. We make the music we want to make, and we don’t kill ourselves doing it. Why burn ourselves out to maybe break even and then not exist anymore? I like to think our fans would hate that more than never seeing us in person.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
We don’t really closely follow a genre formula. We are band that is fronted by a six foot tall alien creature puppet that screams and bites audience members during live performances.
Who have you been listening to lately?
A french industrial band called “Chrysalide”.
Tell us about your passions
I love to run. I am training to be an ultra runner. My goal is to be the fasted 75 year our in the world for a 100 mile race.
What else is happening next in your world?
Lucid Dementia will always exist in some form. I’m finishing up a solo project and then we are going to start work on our next album. The bands line up is so strong right now. The next album is going to be better than anything we’ve ever done before and I’m really looking forward to it.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Sheldon!
