Tell us about yourself and your music
I’m from Montana. I always loved music and would sing along with the music my parents played. One problem, I was so shy. Later on I received a piano for a gift. I started taking piano lessons and song ideas started popping into my head. I found a passion for writing songs and creating something new. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else. I actually go through withdrawals if I can’t play my keyboard or write a song!
Talk to us more about your latest release
I actually just finished three songs. They were mixed by a local studio. My first professionally mixed songs. It was a great experience. Whispers was so fun to do. It is about a relationship that goes wrong, but gets turned around to the unfaithful partner.
What inspired you to write this release?
I was thinking about how we have this inner voice, that sometimes there is this gut feeling that something just isn’t right. So many times we let heartbreak stop us in our tracks. I wanted to write something that would go full circle. Instead of me being tormented by the heartache, turn it around on the betrayer.
Any plans to release a video?
I don’t have any plans to release a video on this particular song. I do have plans for some other songs I have been working on.
Any plans to hit the road?
I plan on playing locally here with a few other musicians. I don’t have any solid dates as of yet. It will be within the next few months.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I stay true to myself. I also talk to other musicians, listen to different styles of music. Anything in our lives can become a new song.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Kahealani Roberts. She’s actually a local artist, plays several different instruments and has a great voice. She is very humble and I don’t think she knows how good she really is. I like to support local artists.
Tell us about your passions
Family! Family is so important to me. I also have some great friends. I love horses. They are so special. I remember going riding in Idaho. We were up on a hill overlooking the town. It was fall so the leaves were beautiful. There was a white steeple of a church poking up through the foliage. It was awe-inspiring. I also love the mountains. It just feels so freeing when I am there. All the worries just seem to disappear. I miss the mountains most where I live now.
What else is happening next in your world?
I will be graduating in the spring with a bachelors in radiology. I am also working on more songs that I hope to have mixed, a video release and more expansive gigging. I will have more to time to do what I love, making music!
Thanks for an awesome interview, Lavina!
