Artist Interview: Lady Coco
Tell us about yourself and your music
Music has been a powerful force in my life for as long as I can remember. My early influences were my parents, both musically inclined, who could perform original down home blues at the drop of a dime! I’ve been heavily influenced by Anita Baker, Teena Marie and Sarah Vaughan with some of my own flavor thrown in! Having become an accomplished lyricist and songwriter and headlining sold out shows at Café Industry & Jazz in Culver City, at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, Hollywood Studio in Hollywood, Catalina Bar & Grill and Nyx Jazz in Glendale, and an unexpected appearance with Wilton Felder of the Crusaders, it gives me great pleasure to share my love of music and song….thank you for spending some time with me!
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest EP release, is titled “Stay In Your Lane”. It was co-written and produced by the legendary songwriter/producer, Preston Glass. Preston has written songs for musical legends such as Aretha Franklin (Who’s Zooming Who), Natalie Cole (Miss You Like Crazy), Earth, Wind and Fire (System of Survival), George Benson (Kisses in the Moonlight) and Kenny G (Duotones CD). I am honored to have worked with him. Stay In Your Lane has a Sly Stone “If You Want Me to Stay” vibe and it features background vocals by the one and only Will Downing. Another song, Groove Like Butta, is an ode to my love of the sax! Sleepin On You is a bluesy, country kind of cut that I wanted to include.
What inspired you to write this release?
I wanted to work with Preston Glass for some time and when he extended the invitation, the music and songs just kind of came together to express some of things I was going thru at the time. My fans were waiting for new music and I kept getting requests at my shows for certain songs, so I knew it was time to do it.
Any plans to release a video?
In development….creative ideas flowing.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ve just finished a series of concert dates. Taking some time to enjoy some other artists performing at various jazz festivals around the country. Will be performing with other artists on the Capital Jazz Supercruise in September. I will be doing a jazz and duets themed show in December in the LA area.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I love taking a song that is familiar to most folks and then changing the arrangement of it to make it my own. I believe I have a unique sound that is very appealing.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I’m really into Gregory Porter these days! His voice is liquid silk and totally inspires me! I am also a fan of Dianne Reeves and Lalah Hathaway. They’re all in my playlist these days!
Tell us about your passions
Besides music……hmmmmmmmmm…… I love entertaining folks so I’m constantly planning some sort of gathering. My husband and I also love to travel and we do that as much as possible. That’s part of why I have to put my concerts on hold for now.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Dorothy!
