Artist Interview: GoChi
Tell us about yourself and your music
Wassup, I go by GoChi Swisha I’m originally from crestmont a small town outside of Philadelphia, currently residing in San Antonio. I grew up in a big church family so I’ve been surrounded by influential singers and songwriters my whole life but I never really wanted to make my own music. Like every other hooper in the world I started off freestyling with a couple teammates when I got to college where I eventually mixed the freestyles in with the poetry I was writing for my literature classes. Fast forwarding past me getting kicked out of school and the passing of my grandfather who was probably the biggest influence on my life, I found myself in a very depressed state in which the only time my mind was at ease was when I was writing songs. This leading to the GoChi Swisha you’re meeting here today.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release is a song off of my first mixtape soul clutter (which is going to be more of a playlist that I nicknamed “the foreva tape” in which I’ll be adding songs until I decide to stop). The song is basically directed to all of the people that question why I enjoy marijuana the way I do. Verse by verse I give detailed description on the things that were on my mind while smoking at the moment from personal/family issues to political/ everyday problems. I feel anyone dealing with the same kind of problems will be able to relate to this song.
What inspired you to write this release?
This song was inspired by multiple influences but to sum it up I would say general thought and everyday life.
Any plans to release a video?
I definitely have plans on getting a video done for this song asap but I like to put a lot of thought into things so I’m still deciding exactly how I want to get this message across in video form.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I’ve only been making music less than a year so I don’t have an established brand for myself YET but that’s only because I’m still exploring all of the possible marketing paths I can take that are going to be beneficial for me and help my music reach the people that I want it to reach. I’m also doing everything on my own so on top of finding a way to put myself out there I’m still trying to find the right people to build a team to help put the plans in motion, there’s still a lot of work ahead of me lol.
Who have you been listening to lately?
I’m a big music head so I put every album that comes out in rotation for a while then move on to something else so it’s hard to pinpoint one artist. My recent go to albums have been Stoney (Post Malone), DC4 (meek mill), 4 your eyez only (J. Cole) much respect for cole, and LilDurk2x
Tell us about your passions
I’m on a mission to be the best male role model for my son, I spent some time depressed and it set me back and kept me stagnant for a couple of years so right now I’m focused on catching up to the man I’m supposed to already be for his sake.
What else is happening next in your world?
My son just turned one that was pretty cool lol and I recently got enrolled into a new school so I’m hoping to play out my last couple of years of eligibility as well as get my degree.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Allen!
