Artist Interview: DeVine Lyric
Tell us about yourself and your music
I am a down to earth person, who is very imperfect. I embrace my authenticity, and appreciate uniqueness. I enjoy being open and honest; I don’t follow the latest trends, or attempt to be like others. I want to encourage or inspire at least one person through my music, and show them it is okay to be different. I have so many life experiences that I tell through my music; after all, it is the expression of my soul. My music tells one big story, with many chapters. I express myself through music, and I like to create songs with meaning and substance to them. I remember listening to all types of music growing up with my family, and I want to give other families that same feeling when listening to my music. I enjoy rock, hip-hop, r&b, jazz, alt. rock, etc. Therefore, my genre is one of diversity, and I am not ashamed. It feels good not limiting yourself to one category.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release truly expresses what I mean by embracing authenticity. Each song has a different meaning, but also different genre. One song will be r&b, and then the next is alternative rock. It was fun compiling such different styles into one album. That is who I am though, I am more than one thing. Eclectic is the best way to explain my album if I could only use one word.
What inspired you to write this release?
My inspiration comes from the passion I have had fro music since I was a young girl. The world has changed so much, and continues to do so everyday. Music is one of the main changes I have noticed, and many songs do not seem to have true substance. I wanted to bring back that music from when I was growing up; they told stories within the songs. I wanted to address real life, everyday issues, while using a nice instrumental to compliment the words. I believe we need more songs that show bravery of speaking up about things we as humans need to change. Unity is key! Along with substance, it was exciting introducing various genres to show I will not stay in a box; what I feel is what I express!
Any plans to release a video?
Yes, I actually already have quite a few videos on my YouTube channel. The latest video ‘That Right There’ addressed the artificial way we present ourselves on social media. This song was inspired from a phone ad. I was playing a word game on my phone, and then an ad popped up that allows you to change your body features, basically plastic surgery through a phone! The song and video is meant to uplift people, and show them that natural beauty is okay. Natural beauty equals uniqueness! We have to remember this, and especially bestow this into the upcoming generation.
Any plans to hit the road?
At the moment, I do not have any tours or concerts lined up. However, I will never say never. Who knows, this may be my year!
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I have not seen artists create music that sounds so vastly different on one album. Usually, artists use a running theme with their music (well the ones that share songs of substance). I believe because my songs are different, it will draw the audience in, and give them a new perspective. I make my music based on how I feel, and I do not worry about what most artists do. A single song of mine can go from sounding like a hip hop song, and flow into a jazz or rock song. I love being creative with my music. Another thing is that I do not style myself differently than how I dress. I don’t use make-up and do the glam shots. I’m just me. I want people to see who I am, not who I should pretend to be.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Lately I have been listening to some rock bands… Soundgarden, Billy Talent, Chevelle, Fleetwood Mac, and other bands. I also have been listening to some gospel music, Tasha Cobbs for example. Again, I listen to everything for the most part. Honestly, the songs I hear most of the time are from years ago; I have not listened to recent songs because there hasn’t been anything inspiring out there. I tend to stick to music from the early 2000s and below.
Tell us about your passions
Besides music, God is what gets me out of bed in the morning. Without Him, I don’t know where I would be, or what I would be doing. My family is my biggest passion, and they give me strength and encouragement to keep going. I want to make them proud, and show them that if you feel strongly about something, don’t be afraid to take that leap. Anything is possible! I enjoy doing for others, and inspiring others; even if that means getting someone to smile who has had a rough day. I appreciate the small victories in life.
What else is happening next in your world?
I am proud to say that I will be graduating in one week with my bachelor’s degree in Psychology (summa cum laude)! After that, I plan on pursuing nursing school or grad school to become a teacher. Helping people and making a difference in someone’s life has always been a dream of mine, whether that is through music, nursing, or teaching. If I can reach one person in a positive way…well… that would be unbelievable!
Thanks for an awesome interview, Melanie!
