Artist Interview: Conceptz
Tell us about yourself and your music
Conceptz is a throw back to 80s and 90s Rap. A time when music had a message and told stories of everyday life. When music was more than just loops and samples but were orchestrated and designed to mirror the musical climate of the time. Blues, Jazz, R&B, Pop and Soul all influenced the music and there was diversity of style. Nowadays everyone sounds the same. Trap music has completely dominated the airwaves and you can’t tell one from the other it is a copy cat genre.
Talk to us more about your latest release
Our latest releases are Multiply and Grandpa’s Whiskey! Multiply is a honest homage to why people do music and what it takes to be successful. The lyrics are about working hard at a 9 to 5 and taking the money and investing it in music. Working hard to live the dream of being able to create music that people will understand, learn from and appreciate while making money doing it. Grandpa’s Whiskey is kind of a parody! It is about a little kid dreaming to be a great rapper. He steals a drink from his Grandpa and is transformed into a star! Of course it is not real whiskey the kid drinks which is depicted in the video. The point is who can do whatever you like as long as you believe. Both Multiply and Grandpa’s Whiskey videos are available on You Tube.
What inspired you to write this release?
Well Multiply was inspired by the fact that a lot of artist who want to be successful in the music business don’t understand what it takes to be successful. They have no idea how much time, money and resources go into the desire success. But it is also an homage to the dedication and commitment of Conceptz to succeed by any means necessary. Grandpa’s Whiskey was just an idea to have fun with. To show young people that the secret to success is in the believe in oneself.
Any plans to release a video?
Videos for both Multiply and Grandpa’s Whiskey are available all over the internet including YouTube. Since all of Conceptz music are based on Concepts, the songs are best understood in video form so we try to shoot a lot of videos.
Any plans to hit the road?
We are planning a spring Tour to start in April. We don’t have venues and dates yet but the cities are New York, Orlando, Miami, Philly, L.A. and San Diego. We will be announcing dates, times and locations in the very near future so check our website www.conceptzmusic.net and follow us on IG, FB an Twitter to get that information @darealconceptz.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
The goal is always to associate the artist faces and logo with quality music. We are heavily engaged in social media and have a line of Conceptz apparel Tee Shirts, Hoodies, bags and caps that we use as give aways to our fan base. This keeps our name and logo fan facing at all times.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Strictly Old School, 80s and 90s Rap/Hip Hop. There are a few artist J Cole, Kendrick Lamar who do real rap but not many artist have those skills. Most so called rappers today do Trap or Mumble Rap and we are plain old not feeling that at all!
What else is happening next in your world?
We are always working on new music. We are focused right now on shining light on real old school rap. Trying to work with some of the old school producers and Dee Jays to show the younger generation that Real Rap is still around and relevant. The old school producers and DJS. Flash, Breakout, Premier, Chuck Chillout, Easy Mo Bee, they don’t get the credit the deserve. We plan to change that.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Charles!
