Artist Interview: Black Tie Event
Tell us about yourself and your music
I’ve been doing music since I was very young. From putting little shows on for my family with a crappy Karaoke machine singing over my favorite country songs to performing accapella in front of my elementary school during lunch periods. I just always loved being able to perform in front of people. I used to want to be Kenny Chesney, I thought he was the coolest, I’d copy his moves and everything. Eventually I fell into the realm of alternative and pop punk music and my country side kind of subsided. I began playing in a band and loved being able to create my own music and everytime someone would say they liked it even in the slightest it would mean the world to me. So I kept going for this feelings and inevitably it gave my life some purpose in a sense, because I am not very sporty at all nor am I academic so it was basically my thing and wanted to do everything I could to embrace it. And I still do.
Talk to us more about your latest release
Our latest release “Dance With Me Or Die” is a more alternative side to us, trying different sounds and vibes to help us grow as musicians and just try something new. Oh yeah and about the name, it doesn’t really mean anything. I make demos for songs I am working on my computer and name them random things when I save them and for some reason for that song I came up with those words and it just stuck.
What inspired you to write this release?
Relationships, friendships, the usual haha. It’s about wanting someone you can’t have and they keep using you when they want you but dropping you as soon as something “better” comes up. You might say it’s a relationship song but it could be about wanting to be someone’s friend they keep blowing you off too. It’s all about how you perceive it
Any plans to release a video?
The video is already out of YouTube. We had Joe Doheny who is studying film help us film it. Usually I just do all the editing and filming myself but in this video you can have a different filming style then mine to change it up!
Any plans to hit the road?
We are heading out on warped tour July 19th thru the 21st! We will be playing in Cincinnati Ohio, noblesville Indiana, and auburn hills Michigan! Come stop by and visit our booth! We also are hitting the road again in August but we aren’t able to announce that quite yet so keep a lookout for that!
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
Being genuine and being a person helps I feel. If you pretend like you’re too good for everyone no one will want to support you. You just seem full of yourself for no reason. The people that are supporting you are literally who can make your dreams come true, you have to cherish and do everything for them cause without them you’re just playing songs to the wall. I do this by reaching out to fans and keeping them up with things going on in my life, band related and not band related. I feel a lot of bands think this is too much effort but I feel it’s 100% necessary to connect with your audience
Who have you been listening to lately?
I have been actually listening to manzions and blackbear lately. And I’ve been listening relient k of course. I feel it’s good to listen to lots of different music so when I write my own music you hear that genre fusion that everyone seems to love now a days including myself
Tell us about your passions
I really like hanging out with friends and traveling places. I like seeing everything the world has to offer outside of my town. I really like to kayak, I can kayak for 10 miles straight and want to do it again. I like to be unique too I am always making strides to be different than everyone else wether I am just dressing different or avoiding trends to just be an exception like you can bet your life I never bought a fidget spinner or downloaded Pokémon go. I don’t know why I am like this but I genuinely enjoy it
What else is happening next in your world?
Next, I am excited to go on tour and perform. It feels like it’s been forever since we havent performed since may. But after that we will probably go back to song writing and record another album soon with new music. Plus we are going to start recording covers at some point to help keep our content consistent and grow the band at the same time
Thanks for an awesome interview, Brendan!
