Artist Interview: Arlette Thomas-Fletcher
Tell us about yourself and your music
I started singing in the children’s choir at church as a little girl. Although I love all kinds of music, my favorites are gospel, opera, and jazz. Years ago, I worked with Dr. Carter from the Morgan State University choir and was even given an opportunity to sit in on a Master class with Leontyne Price once. It was the most magnificent experience I have had with music thus far. I was also able to work with Baltimore Opera music coach Milagros Wilson who taught me classical operatic music. I’ve been able to sing at ArtScape for the Cultural Alliance and I’ve performed for non-profits, church, businesses and family events. My passion is singing and I specifically love to sing inspirational music. In addition to singing, I’m also a writer, director, and producer of Christian films and videos. “You’re Not Alone” is one of my music videos on YouTube. I am also an author and have written an inspirational poetry book called “Poetry for the Soul” which can be found on Amazon. It brings me joy to see people’s faces light up while they enjoy my music
Talk to us more about your latest release
I am so excited that listeners enjoy hearing “You’re Not Alone”! This song is truly a blessing to me in knowing that I am not alone and that God is always there for me. Many times we go through challenges in our everyday life and it is good to know that we can find peace in knowing that God will guide and help us find the answers to life’s problems. So I pray for all of you and your families to be blessed everyday with joy and love as you live your life. I do have a new release coming soon called “Jesus You Are The One I Depend On” I know the name is long but the title states the meaning of how I feel about the Lord. He is the one I depend on. I hope you know you can depend on Him too. God Bless!
What inspired you to write this release?
My sister. I was inspired to write this as a poem initially for my sister when we were children. She was a wayward teenager and used to run away from home from time to time. I was so worried about her. I wrote her this as a poem called “You’re Not Alone.” The poem became a very inspiring piece. I used to perform it at open mics. People would always come up and tell me how inspiring the poem was to them. As years went by I decided to make a song from my poem when my mother died. Because after her death I felt very much alone, but the Holy Spirit inspired me to know once again I was not alone. That God’s love would carry me through and it did.
Any plans to release a video?
“You’re Not Alone” has a video on YouTube and the address is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OikZmTcklA. The story is conveyed by a little girl and her mother who have suffered from hard times. It is through this little girl’s prayers that we see the life of her parents change and how important it is to believe and have faith in God during these trying times.
Any plans to hit the road?
I usually perform at nursing homes during the fall and music in the park events during the summer. I would love to go on the road to different cities and perform as well.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
As an indie artist, I brand myself by using lyrics about everyday problems. I like to sing about things which encourage people, letting them know that God will deliver them from the difficult situations in their lives. I write from the personal battles that I face. It’s a comfort knowing that I am not alone and that I always have an advocate in Jesus Christ.
Who have you been listening to lately?
The artists that I listen to are Tamela Mann, Tasha Cobbs, Aretha Franklin, and Shirley Caesar to name a few.
What else is happening next in your world?
My first western feature film screenplay won Best Screenplay award from the Christian Film Festival for my screenplay “The Lonesome Trail.” This screenplay also was featured at the Christian Film Festival, Los Angeles Lift Film Festival, and the Los Angeles Cine Fest. A featured article has been written about “The Lonesome Trail” in the Charisma Magazine. While still in post-production, the film has also been accepted to the Christian Database. “The Lonesome Trail” film will be my first debut as director for a feature-length film. I also have a pilot film called “Where’s Daddy” which is in post-production.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Arlette!
