Artist Interview: Anything Goez

Artist Interview: Anything Goez

Tell us about yourself and your music

I’m 64 years old and I grew up in San Francisco during the 60’s. I fell in love with pop music when The Beatles arrived in 1964 and like a lot of my peers, formed a rock band and practiced in the garage & performed at school dances, talent shows, house parties, any place where there might be an audience. We played cover tunes of all the music that we heard on AM radio. Kinks, Beatles, Stones, Them, Wilson Pickett, The Miracles, you name it. I learned some basic guitar chords and wrote my first song two years later in1966. Also, I began to educate myself about the roots of this music by learning about blues, r & b, folk, country, and all the wonderful artists who originally created the form. I performed in clubs and dance halls throughout the bay area and toured through 3 states over a period of 10 years.

Talk to us more about your latest release

My latest release has been a series of singles for download under the name, Anything Goez. It is my version of a progressive rock sound as a singer/songwriter with multiple influences and blending of genres. Currently, I’m working on an entire album which I hope to release later on this year.

What inspired you to write this release?

The basic melody I had played off and on for years on the guitar but I had never developed an approach on how it should be performed either live or as a recording. I suppose I was inspired by a combination of English folk music and acoustic jazz. It is an instrumental. This made it unlike most of my songs in that there is no lyric.

Any plans to release a video?

There is a video out on YouTube and on my Facebook page.

Any plans to hit the road?

I don’t have any plans at this time to tour. Mostly, I’m trying to generate some interest and build an audience online. If there is an audience for this music and that leads to an interest in live dates, well, that would be really nice!

As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?

I believe it is my experience musically and my life experience that makes the music stand out. Although I’m not in my twenties or thirties, I think my perspective is still fresh and original.

Who have you been listening to lately?

I must confess, I don’t listen to a lot of current artists although I’m aware of them through television and online. I think the performers of today are making the music for their audiences which are in a certain age demographic which is how it was when I was that age. As I got older, I began to search out blues performers, jazz artists, reggae, any roots music that spoke to me.

Tell us about your passions

I’m a total book worm. I visit the public library regularly and read constantly everything, fiction. non-fiction, biographies, mysteries, sci fy, horror, any thing that’s well written. Movies and Theatre when I can see them. My wife, my kids, and my grandkids. Good food. Good friends.

What else is happening next in your world?

I’m still working a day job to get the bills paid. Music, unfortunately has never been my primary source of income. I’ve made some money over the years and I’m a registered BMI songwriter and collect writers royalties for a song I co-wrote in 1973 titled Everlasting Night for the latin/rock band Malo. Looking forward to retirement and maybe I’ll get to make some more music since that still gets me up in the morning.

Thanks for an awesome interview, Robert!
