Artist Interview: Aj Quiero
Tell us about yourself and your music
My music could be described as a blend of a bunch of different stuff. When people hear my music they sometimes don’t know what genre to place it. I’ve made hip-hop, and I’ve also been in punk and acoustic bands. Right now i’m moving from the old feel of hip-hop and r&b that I used to make, to a more energetic, personal, punk feel. It’s going to be different but my fans will love it.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest release, that I released as an independent artist, is called “Dark Days; Long Nights.” I had just gotten a student loan for college, and decided to buy myself a new studio. I had wanted to work with this producer named JackTheLion for a long time, and when I finally could I locked myself in the studio for a week with the music and just created.
What inspired you to write this release?
My experiences as an artist in Ohio. Being out and doing shows, missing out on people because of the lifestyle I was living. Also a lot of Jack Daniels. Jack Daniels played a major role in the making of DDLN
Any plans to release a video?
I try to shoot a video for every single project that I make. Just so that people have a visual and a real feel for what I was going through and feeling.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m dj-ing as 1/2 of Pyro X Queezy on Feb. 4th. There will hopefully be more dates to announce in a bit. Maybe a tour, who knows. It’s up to my label at this point.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
That’s a good question. I just make the music that I want to make. I don’t worry about what’s popular or what is trending. When I do make “pop” music, I like to make it my own, and have my own feel to it.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Lately I’ve been listening to bands like Myka Relocate, Slaves, and Dance Gavin Dance. I Also enjoy Nylo, iLoveMakonnen, and Twenty88.
Tell us about your passions
Food. Specifically pizza. One day I want to open up a pizza shop, on Ohio State Campus, and serve up hot slices. 😉
What else is happening next in your world?
Working on a bunch of new music!! I haven’t released any details from it yet, but I plan on releasing an pair of albums completely independent (Unless my label wants to release them), titled “Love and Alienation” and the second isn’t titled yet. “Love and Alienation” will primarily be acoustic with hip-hop and punk influences. The second will be the same songs from the “Love and Alienation”, except they will be nothing but the essentials. Drums, Guitars, and Vocals. It will have a really punk pop vibe. I’m excited because I love pushing boundaries and making things interesting.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Aj!
