Tell us about yourself and your music
Hello, I’m a 17 year old singer born and raised in Michigan. I began singing in my room and in the shower when no one was around.
I’ve been working with music ever since I heard my first tune. When I had won a contest to fly to New York City in 2013 and meet Austin Mahone, I had been truly inspired by his words of wisdom saying to, “Never give up.” Ever since then, I have been trying to defy the rules set by society. Being a senior in high school, working at McDonalds, my friends and family know I’ve built myself from the bottom and pushed my way up. In 2015, I had the great opportunity to record a song with YouTube aspiring rapper, Sir Skitzo. The song was a huge success with over 50,000 plays on YouTube, and 28,000 on Soundcloud, I was shocked. Completely amazed. In 2016, Skitzo and I released the single, “More Than You Know,” talking about taking a path no one else has seen before, I wanted to show people it’s okay to be differen’t. I’m looking forward to it’s great accomplishments and can not believe my dreams are becoming a reality.
Talk to us more about your latest release
My latest single, “More Than You Know,” featuring Sir Skitzo, has reached great heights. I have recieved AMAZING feedback from fans all around the world. It’s absolutely unbelievable. The single has over 14,000 plays on Spotify and with the music video releasing soon, I hope an even brighter future for the song. The music video will be directed by my friend who is very great at editing. I also help with that. It’s awesome to get a feel for that so I know what to expect.
Sir Skitzo lives in Canada so he will be sending his part of the video over to us in Michigan, and we will merge it together.
What inspired you to write this release?
Society. Every kid in this world has been taught that some things are just “too hard” to reach. No. Anything is possible. Over my years in school, I never fit in because I was doing something everyone else is scared to do. Sir Skitzo and I wanted to spread this song so that kids our age know what happens when you follow your dreams when others say you can’t.
Any plans to release a video?
Yes! My friend Chase had formed a great idea for a video. I attend Genesee Career Institute for Grahpic Design. He goes for music production and they have a studio set up. Each class period, our teachers let us take the time to record some of the video. We got some students involved and it’s going to be great!! There is no release date yet, but it should be soon.
Any plans to hit the road?
Not at the moment but with hard work, I know I’ll get there.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I’m myself. I speak the truth and I try to relate to kids my age. I promote myself as well as I can and create a differen’t prespective of what music really is about.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Red Hot Chili Peppers. They leave a good vibe whenever I’m driving down the road or even just hanging out. They’re very relaxing to me.
Tell us about your passions
The thought of getting through high school and just pushing through each shift at McDonalds because it will be worth it in the end.
What else is happening next in your world?
I hope to be way better at guitar. I can play a few songs as of right now, but I would LOVE to be able to play for an audience without messing up.
While working on my music career, I will be attending Mott Community College for an associates degree in Graphic Design and take music technology classes to obtain a degree in music production.
Thanks for an awesome interview, Shayla!
